Bonnet shown is made in lavender Pique with fabric ties and a 6" skirt.
A very historical bonnet that has been worn by ladies and their daughters since the Civil War era! The Slat Bonnet was named after the "slats" that were made from hickory or cedar used to stiffen the brim. Was most often worn outside by those who worked "around the homestead". The deep brim and long skirt (called a Bavolet) protected the face and neck from the sun.
This Slat Bonnet offered by Rachels' is made of a durable polyester/cotton fabric. The brim is reinforced with a heavy fusible interfacing and 5 stitching lines 1" apart are sewn on the brim lengthwise for extra durability. The crown has a double layer of fabric and the bonnet skirt has several pleats in the back. The skirt can be made in several lengths (please indicate your length desired in the space provided). Fabric or ribbon ties can also be chosen. Sizes S (16"-17" head size), M (18"-19") and L (20"-22").
New! Slat Bonnet can also be made for older girls ages approx. 6 to 12. Please measure head circumference size and state age of child when ordering.
In stock fabrics for the Slat Bonnet are black, charcoal grey, heather grey and heather navy blue (navy is available in Kettle Cloth - a very durable fabric!). Other fabric colors may be available upon request.
